QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS CONTACT THE DPI HELPLINE Lychee erinose mite is a serious pest that deforms the plant and produces reddish-brown velvety growth on the underside of the leaves. In severe cases flowers are destroyed and fruit-setting prevented. Lychee trees are susceptible to erinose mite but a simple remedy will have them producing fruit again in no time. - Once treatments are completed, trees will be monitored monthly for the presence of lychee erinose mite for 3 months. The treatment includes defoliation and pruning of the tree followed by up to eight applications of sulfur-based miticide. Re-skinned lychee varieties proved particularly suited to the oil treatment, with colour enhancement recorded and the fruit storing well for up to two weeks at 5°C. “We have eradicated this pest twice before in 1958 and 1993, and we are confident in our methods to eradicate LEM again.”. Funding statement: This project was a strategic levy investment in the Hort Innovation Lychee Fund. To date, only one positive tree has been identified in Miami-Dade County. “The eradication of the lychee erinose mite is essential to protecting Florida’s lychee industry, the number one commercial production area for lychee in the United States,” said Dr. Trevor Smith, Director of the FDACS Division of Plant Industry. © 2018 Horticulture Innovation Australia Limited. Trees that test positive will be defoliated, pruned, and treated by the FDACS Division of Plant Industry. This process includes checking all lychee trees within a half-mile radius of any new find for the presence of the mite and resurveying previous negative sites. The researchers investigated simple postharvest treatments to reliably remove the mite from fruit destined for markets including the US and New Zealand. trees and decrease lychee yields by 80%. This project ran from 2016 to 2018 to help address a potential barrier to the export of Australian lychees: the presence of common pest the lychee erinose mite (Aceria litchii). The mite causes erineum galls (hairy, abnormal growths) to form on the leaves of the tree. Without treatment, an infestation of mites can severely damage the tree, fruit and flowers. See Attachment A for details of treatment. Though oil alone didn’t completely eliminate the pests, the addition of pressure washing before, and two minutes after, the oil application further reduced their incidence. - If a negative tree becomes positive for lychee erinose mite, the tree will receive the positive tree treatment process. While lychees heading to these export destinations are subject to an irradiation protocol to eradicate target quarantine pests, the non-target erinose mite is able to withstand current irradiation rates – and higher rates could damage the fruit. The mites are invisible to the naked eye and live on the underside of the leaves amongst the erinose. Without treatment, an infestation of mites can severely damage the tree, fruit and flowers. 3. As fruit experienced severe browning at the fumigation rates required to kill mites and other insect pests, the project moved its focus on to the oil and water method. They can grow to 100 feet (30 m.) tall and have an equal spread. Following this work, Hort Innovation Lychee Fund project Mite and insect disinfestation of lychee fruit using high pressure water sprays (LY18000) was established to look at optimising the efficacy of high-pressure water application, to allow higher throughput on the packing line. Key research provider: The Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Publication date: Thursday, April 4, 2019, Treatment for mites on lychee fruit prior to irradiation for improved market access (LY16002). These control measures will be taken at no expense to the owner and all debris will be removed. Further, the oil treatment was assessed in combination with irradiation, with no adverse interaction between the two seen – and during the project, a commercial shipment of lychees treated using oil and irradiation successfully entered the US. See Attachment A for details of treatment. In early 2018 the mite was found in Lee County. But even lovely lychee trees are not pest free. Subscribe/RSS. However, it may be in other counties as well; this is under investigation. Click here for a map of Florida counties with LEM through March 2020. This program is funded through the Plant Pest and Disease Management and Disaster Prevention Program in partnership with the USDA-APHIS. However, the two-minute time lag required for the oil to be efficacious prior to the final water spray to remove dead or dying pests did impact on packing rates. Lychee trees produce delicious fruit, but they are also beautiful, majestic trees in their own right. LY16002 Disinfestation of mites on lychee in conjunction with radiation for improved market access of lychee to the USA 6 Introduction Australian lychee (Litchi chinensis) was granted market access to the USA in 2013 under a trial protocol that included irradiation as the disinfestation treatment. In looking at additional treatments to tackle mites, the project team evaluated postharvest dipping and flood spraying with paraffinic oil, and the potential for oil in combination with physical pre- and post-treatment cleaning using high-pressure/high-volume water sprays. It causes erineum galls, or hairy abnormal growths, to form on the leaves of the lychee tree. A Futures Contract On Produce In The U.S.? It was recently detected in Lee County infesting lychee trees. After identification and an initial survey, the department quarantined movement of any lychee plant, plant parts or fruit from Lee County to any other Florida destination due to the dense population of the mite in the county. Lychee tree pests can cause problems for the homeowner, given the size of the tree. Also of note, in the first year of LY16002 the project team considered the use of fumigation with ethyl formate and carbon dioxide as an alternative treatment for mites. The researchers investigated simple postharvest treatments to reliably remove the mite from fruit destined for markets including the US and New Zealand.
